Forrest M. Hoffman
Forrest M. Hoffman has been a computational climate scientist jointly appointed to the Computer Science and Mathematics Division and the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at ORNL since 1993. Hoffmann performs software engineering on the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) as part of a DOE Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) project focusing on climate research. His other responsibilities include systems analysis and design for the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program; developing and implementing internet technologies for the U.S. Global Change Data and Information System's (GCDIS) globalchange.gov server; establishing and employing serial and parallel scientific models used in environmental analyses and predictions; and designing supporting software tools for visualization, analysis, and publication of scientific data and information.
From 1992 to 1993, Hoffman worked as a scientific programmer/analyst for the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s Department of Geological Sciences, located at ORNL. In this position, he performed system administration, systems programming, and management of several Unix-based workstations and mini-supercomputers. He developed and modified scientific models and tools used in environmental analyses, including numerical models and visualization systems used to model and analyze environmental data.
Hoffman is also active in many professional organizations including the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society (Smoky Mountain Chapter, of which he was the Chapter President in 2005), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society, and the International Environmental Modeling and Software Society. Hoffman also served as a contributing editor and columnist for “Extreme Linux” from 2002 to 2006.
